Tips For Buying a Spa

Depth

Overall depth should be a leading factor in picking out a tub that is best for your family.

  • If you intend to put the tub outside, make sure that the water level will come as high as your neckline in at least two of the spa seats, this will ensure you will be comfortable on those snowy winter nights.
  • If you have small children, make sure the tub you get has a good size step or "cool down" seat. This will give the child a place to sit in the water without having to stand or swim. (550c spa seat area)
  • If you intend to put a spa inside, be sure to measure the width and height of the door as well as the spa.

One Pump vs Two Pump Tubs

Two pump systems are highly recommended for families who will have varying preferences on jet power. A two-pump system allows you to run separate zones of the tub at varying speeds. This is ideal if one partner wants the jets on very strong and the other wants the power to be more moderate.

Insulation - The Key To Making Your Spa Energy Efficient

Insulation should be an important factor for people putting the spa outside in the winter months. Making sure that the tub is well insulated will ensure that the spa will not loose, and therefore need to recover, as much heat. The sidewalls should be well insulated as well as the cover. Most spa covers tend to loose a good deal of heat through the centerfold. Some covers offer an insulating bar that lies between the two cover parts, this is highly recommended.

Lounger Shape

Loungers tend to be a feature that consumers ask about often, however many spa owners do not use the lounger regularly if at all. This is because they did not pick out a lounger that was best for them. People are naturally buoyant; when they lay back they tend to float up to the surface of the spa. Buoyancy in conjunction with the jet power coming through the spa creates the tendency to float out of the lounging position.

On average women tend to have a greater difficulty with loungers then men. In addition, those who tend to be more fit generally have fewer problems with floating out of loungers. Some tubs offer loungers that have almost a vertical back, which keeps the bather from floating.

Ozonation

Ozonators are one of the most popular spa items. They add oxidation to the spa to keep the water clear. Keep in mind that an ozonator does not keep the water healthy so it is imperative that you keep chlorine in the spa to keep the water sanitary. To eliminate the use of chlorine, thereby getting rid of the smell, bleaching, drying… use a non-chlorine sanitizer like Baqua Spa. (Link)

Why Re-Circulating Pumps Don't Do The Job

Constant Re-Circulating pumps are generally not a good idea for spa care. Generally these pumps are small low Horse Power pumps that run constantly. Unfortunately they do not push water through the pipe with enough force to break the algae off the inner wall of the pipes. It is more advisable to use a more powerful pump for a few hours, twice a day.

Foot Massage

While some people love foot massages, other do not. It is important to get a tub that has a foot massage system that can be turned on and off. It is extra nice if the foot massage can be adjustable power.

Handheld Jets

Hot tub jets only hit the area of the body that is in front of the jet. A handheld jet or a jet on a hose adds the convenient feature of being able to hit any part of the body you want.

Cover Lifters

A cover lifter makes removing the large bulky cover a snap. Both hydraulic and mechanical cover lifters are available. Some cover lifters will stand the cover up next to the tub while others leave the cover "table topped" which will not block any views from the tub. Covers that are not removed by some sort of cover lifter run a greater risk of tears, wear, punctures and water damage.

Stairs

Entering and exiting the tub can be a hassle, especially in the deeper units. It is recommended that you have stairs both on the outside and inside of the spa. Steps going into the water can also act as a seat for children or as a way to "cool off" if the warm water has caused the bather to overheat.

Draining Systems

It is recommend that you get a tub that has an easy drain system. Hot tubs need to be drained, cleaned and re-filled about once every three to four months. Tubs that don't have a recessed center drain need to be pumped out with a mechanical pump and then the remaining few inches of water need to be sopped out with rags. Having a recessed center drain allows you, and gravity to empty the spa 100% with no effort.
