They're part of a closed loop sanitary system and have been carefully placed in the coping of the spa, so they never touch the clean water and never get touched by small hands. In addition, this filter system offers 100% filtration. It's another way to make sure your water stays sparkling clean. This type of "pressurized filtration" is an industry standard for commercial filtration systems however most residential manufacturers choose to use a passive filtration system instead. By putting the filter housing directly in the spa with the bather, the cartridge is theoretically rinsed off in the spa, when removed from the housing. Emerald's design avoids this problem by putting the housing out of the tub and sealed off by a screw down lid, making their spa very "child friendly".
